Why “being strong” sometimes leads to burnout

Day 5: Burnout? Why Romanticizing Your Day Might Be the Answer
Saturday Aug 02, 2025
Saturday Aug 02, 2025
Tired, but don’t know why? It might not be the work. It might be the pressure to prove your worth through it.
In today’s episode, I’m digging into something I see all the time, especially with highly ambitious leaders and executives: the exhaustion that comes not from the tasks, but from tying your worth to constant output.
We’re flipping the script on productivity, perfectionism, and the rat race by learning how to romanticize our lives again, not just the milestones, but the midweek, regular-smegular moments too.
I’ll share my own story of performance-based identity, why "recovery" and "restoration" are not the same thing, and how to create your own daily “signature moment” that energizes your soul, not just your schedule.
✨ This episode will help you:
-
Break the belief that rest has to be earned
-
Detach your identity from endless proving
-
Add everyday magic to your work routine
-
Create a “Breakout Block” that fills your cup, not your calendar
Want the journal page to help you plan your razzle dazzle moment and restoration time?

Day 3: A 2-Minute Daily Habit That Builds Self Care + Confidence
Thursday Jul 31, 2025
Thursday Jul 31, 2025
If you could get one hour back in your day, how would you spend it?
In this episode, I’m unpacking one of the most overlooked reasons we feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck—we wait until the end of the day to make space for ourselves. But by then? We’re already depleted, running on fumes, and numbing out in survival mode.
That’s why I created the Win Before 10™ practice: a 2, 10, or 20-minute ritual that centers you before the world gets loud.
Not because it’s cute—but because alignment before achievement is how we reclaim our peace, clarity, and energy.
🎧 In this episode, you’ll learn:
-
Why starting your day in survival mode is costing you more than you think
-
What alignment actually means (and how to spot when you’re out of it)
-
How to create a realistic morning ritual that fuels you—even if you only have 2 minutes
-
The powerful mindset shift that helps you protect your peace all week long

Yeah, me too.
In this episode, we’re unpacking why traditional goal-setting can backfire, and how to reset with intention, not just ambition. This isn’t about hustling harder. It’s about setting goals that feel good in your soul.
✨ In today’s reset, you’ll learn:
• The #1 mindset shift to stop spiraling when outcomes don’t happen fast enough
• Why “more” isn’t always better—and how to focus on what truly matters
• How to define success based on how you want to feel, not just what you produce
PLUS: I’ll walk you through a journaling prompt to help you set aligned, doable goals for the season you’re in.

A Cure For Self Doubt?
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
Is there a "cure" for self-doubt? This question stopped me in my tracks when it appeared in my Facebook comments recently. After interviewing nearly hundreds of leaders for Black Enterprise magazine—from first-time entrepreneurs to C-Suite executives and even the First Female VP of Malawi—I discovered something surprising: not one of them had "overcome" their self-doubt. Instead, they shared a powerful framework for transforming their relationship with it.
In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on what really sets successful leaders apart (hint: it's not the absence of doubt). I'll share their exact reframing techniques, including a genius perspective from 50 Cent about handling rejection. Plus, I'll reveal my own journey from seeking a "cure" to discovering something far more valuable.
If you've ever felt like your self-doubt was holding you back, this episode might just change everything.
Listen and let me know what you think.

As we approach the end of the year, it's easy to get caught up in the pressure to tick off those big, tangible goals. And let’s be real—if you’re anything like me, that pressure can quickly turn into a guilt spiral when we realize we haven’t achieved everything we set out to. But what if we’re measuring our progress all wrong?
In this episode, I'm diving into the most powerful question I’ve been asking myself to avoid that year-end spiral.
We’ll talk about what it really means to honor your commitments, why showing up for yourself matters as much as showing up for others, and how to reset and realign your goals without all the self-criticism.
Plus, I’ll share some of my own end-of-year reflections—both the wins and where I’ve fallen short—and how I’m giving myself grace while still holding myself accountable. Trust me, this conversation is all about real talk, gentle reminders, and finding a sense of pride in the promises we do keep. Feedback: Should You Accept or Reject It?
Tuesday Oct 22, 2024
Tuesday Oct 22, 2024
Ever feel like you're drowning in feedback that feels more like shade than constructive criticism? Today, I'm breaking down my four-step filtering process that helps you decide whether to take that feedback to heart or let it go. Think of it like those Instagram filters we love – you can use feedback to enhance your path or let it distort your success.
In this episode, I'm keeping it real about navigating workplace feedback without losing yourself in the process. I'll show you how to spot the difference between feedback that enhances your path and feedback that might be rooted in bias.
You'll learn:
- How to evaluate feedback based on the source and their motives
- Why vague feedback terms might be code for bias
- When to take patterns seriously and when to question them
- The art of seeking clarity without getting defensive
- How to handle feedback that doesn't align with your authentic self
Plus, I'm sharing a personal story about how I had to check my ego when my manager told me I lacked empathy (spoiler alert: she was right, y'all!).
Whether you're climbing the corporate ladder or building your own empire, this episode will give you the tools to filter feedback. And it’s your playbook for separating the gold from the garbage. Remember, feedback is a tool, not a directive – and I'm here to help you use it wisely.
Got a workplace struggle you want me to address?
Email me at hello@kandiajohnson.com and your question might just show up in a future episode! Don't forget to share this episode with your people so they can share it with their people. 💪🏾

How Yoga Helped Me Heal and Lead with Confidence w/Dr/Nila Austin
Wednesday Sep 25, 2024
Wednesday Sep 25, 2024
What if I told you that when it comes to leading yourself with confidence, healing from trauma, and finding peace in the chaos of life, yoga can be the powerful tool you’ve been missing—and it’s not just about flexibility or fitness?
In this episode, I had an incredible conversation with Dr. Nila Austin, Director of Student Experience at DC Public Schools, award-winning educator, and my own yoga instructor (and cousin!). We dove deep into how yoga has transformed both of our lives—physically, mentally, and spiritually—and how it can help you, too.
Here’s a sneak peek of what we talked about:
- How yoga helps us lead ourselves before we lead others
- Why rest and stillness are just as powerful as action
- The surprising ways yoga can help us heal and grow—especially how Dr. Nila's yoga practice was deeply influenced by the passing of her little brother
Plus, many people think you need a specific body type to do yoga, but Dr. Nila is on a mission to change that narrative and show that yoga is for everyone.
Connect with Nila
At the end of our conversation, Nila shared her vision of creating healthy, transparent, and equitable opportunities through her non-profit, GiveLand. You can follow her on Instagram @dr.soulga_yogi and learn more about her foundation GiveLand.
About #4TheCulture
We also discussed Nila’s #4TheCulture program, which provides students with exposure to careers in fields like cosmetology, digital photography, writing, and creative design—helping students discover their passions and potential.
